Josephine Gordon said she was “pinching herself” after a remarkable season in the saddle which will end with her being crowned champion apprentice on Saturday.

After nearest rival Tom Marquand turned professional on Monday, Gordon entered last night’s meeting two ahead of last year’s champion, and she celebrated her status as champion-elect with a shock 22-1 winner on Thane Of Cawdor in the 1m1½f handicap.

It looked like being a frustrating evening for Gordon after finishing second and third on her first two rides, however the Joseph Tuite-trained gelding produced the goods with a surging run on the outside.
