Goodwood's whiteness this week shows why Wicheard was right to take the knee

It may not matter to you but it matters to her and, whether you realise it or not, it matters to this sport. That's why Ashleigh Wicheard leading a taking of the knee prior to the Magnolia Cup was worthy of racing's gratitude and praise.

We have seen similar acts in other sports ever since the 2020 murder of George Floyd and will see it again when England's Lionesses take on Germany in Sunday's Euro 22 Final. We had seen nothing like it in racing.

Nobody is suggesting jockeys riding in an Ascot Group 1 or Southwell seller should be consistently making that display of solidarity with the black community. Racing is not a team sport, but nor is racing immune from having a racial diversity problem. Look at any of the crowd pictures from Goodwood this week and you will struggle to disagree.
