Goldie's oldies strike as Plate hero Nicholas T lands another track victory
Saturday: Newcastle
The old adage age is just a number was emphatically illustrated by Jim Goldie after he landed a double with two veterans, headlined by Nicholas T's win in the feature 2m½f conditions stakes.
The nine-year-old once again demonstrated his affinity for Gosforth Park, having been victorious in the Northumberland Plate earlier in the year.
"He’s very much a Newcastle horse, he absolutely bounces off the surface,” said Goldie. "When they announced All-Weather Championships finals day was going to Newcastle, we made the plan to try and win this race and qualify – job done."
Goldie and jockey Paul Mulrennan quickly doubled up courtesy of another nine-year-old, Sir Chauvelin, who overcome a serious injury setback and made it back-to-back course-and-distance wins in the 1m4½f handicap.
Goldie added: "He was probably one race away from retirement, he had a fracture a few years ago and had complications from the screws. It’s great to get him bouncing back to form and see him enjoying himself – he’s a superstar."
On leading rider Mulrennan, the Glasgow-based handler said: "I’m blessed to have such a good jockey. To me he’s the number one in the north, he’s first class."
Gosden’s debut another quality juvenile
John and Thady Gosden have previously made the trip to Newcastle to debut Group 1 winners Enable and Without Parole and look to have another smart prospect in Franz Strauss, who struck in the mile novice.
The Godolphin owned juvenile was sent off the 6-5 favourite and duly obliged under Robert Havlin to secure a half-length success over Nolton Cross.
