Nicholas T usually excels when racing around Ayr but proved he is no one-track pony as he posted a career-best effort on Newcastle's all-weather surface with a shock victory in the feature 1m4½f handicap.

The eight-year-old, trained by Jim Goldie, is a seven-time winner at the Scottish track but had not won at any other course in more than three years and was sent off the 18-1 outsider of the field.

However, he looked a different prospect this time and scooted clear from his rivals to spring a surprise under Phil Dennis.
