Gamble landed! Barden Bella bolts up for Christian Williams
The five-hour plus trip from Bridgend to Catterick was worthwhile for the Christian Williams team as Barden Bella justified a big market move in the 1m7½f novice handicap chase.
Barden Bella was as big as 14-1 in the morning but returned the successful 5-2 favourite after a seven-length victory under Gavin Sheehan, who rode a treble on the card courtesy of Anythingforlove in the 1m7½f mares' novice hurdle and Sigurd in the 3m1f handicap chase.
'It was nice, but a terrible race," said Williams, who also saddled the third Annie Day. "We brought two up here specifically for this race and both of them ran well, so we're delighted.
"I wasn't expecting much or nothing from Barden Bella to be honest. She did lots of schooling before we got her and jumped well, and obviously that's the name of the game.
"I thought Annie Day would be the one to win, but I couldn't be more pleased – it was a good day all round."
Mick takes it
Nick Kent received a Christmas surprise when Ballycallan Flame sprung a 125-1 shock at Wetherby on Saturday, and his fine festive period continued when Mick Maestro eased to victory in the 1m7½f handicap hurdle.
The seven-year-old scored by 15 lengths under Charlie Todd to give the North Lincolnshire trainer an important winner in front of the ITV Racing cameras.
Storey time again
Toi Storey lost his way after winning the 3m1½f handicap hurdle on this card last year, but bounced back to his best to win it again under champion jockey Brian Hughes.
