Tuesday: Chepstow

It was only at 9am that Colin Tizzard decided to make the journey from his Dorset home to Chepstow and he was thrilled he did after seeing his grandson Freddie Gingell record victory on Rose Of Arcadia in the mares' handicap hurdle.

The seven-year-old is trained by Colin's son Joe – Gingell's uncle – and the conditional made it look easy, cruising to victory by nine and a half lengths.

"Fred has been waiting all his life for this and today is another big day – his first as a professional – and everyone will say he looked round too much, but he said he was going so easy and didn't want to push the horse if he didn't have to," Tizzard said.

"He's just a young boy and everything else was perfect."

The conditional is based with the all-conquering Paul Nicholls, whose Ditcheat stable is just across the Somerset border from the Tizzard base.

"I don't think there is any boy riding who would say no if they were asked by the champion trainer," Tizzard added. "He was asked and hasn't ridden out for us this autumn because he's at Paul's full time. He's in the yard at 6.30am and he'll probably be on his way back in a minute for evening stables, which is good discipline for him."

Bailey spooked

Halloween is upon us and Kim Bailey admitted he had a fright when he saw Chianti Classico's opposition in division one of the maiden hurdle, but he was all smiles following the race.

The trainer, whose runner repelled the Paul Nicholls-trained 10-11 favourite Henri The Second, said: "I'm chuffed. I didn't think we'd win today, I really didn't.

"I know Paul thinks a lot of his horse and I thought it was a very deep maiden hurdle. When I saw the split of divisions, I thought, 'Crikey!' But he's a lovely horse and we've always liked him."

Owner remembered

The victory of Walkinthewoods in the 2m handicap hurdle was a poignant one for Evan Williams.

He trains the five-year-old for Vale Racing and said: "Irving Struel had a share in this horse and he died at the age of 87 this week.

"He had horses with Nicky Henderson too and was a very good owner for me. He kept us all grounded and told me he'd die. I told him we all would, but he said he'd do it quickly! He was a good old boy."

Williams completed a double when Olympic Honour struck in the 2m3½f handicap hurdle under his daughter Isabel, who said: "It's nice Dad's horses are flying."

Double trouble

Deadly duo Fergal O'Brien and Paddy Brennan enjoyed a double thanks to victories from Manothepeople and Nothin To Ask in the novice handicap chases over 3m2f and 2m3½f.

The latter was particularly impressive and Brennan appeared in total control.

"I'm glad he did win as he'd have looked very silly looking around like he was three out!" O'Brien joked.
