No matter what the elements throw at it, British Champions Day has a welcome knack of defying the weather gods and living up to its star billing.

Remember, this was a concept that at best divided opinion when the autumn programme was rejigged at the start of the decade to create a new finale to the British turf season.

The detractors were apprehensive about it attracting the best so soon after Longchamp's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting, as well as fearing its mid-October date would deliver conditions more suited to Chepstow's annual slog-fest on December 27.
