'Extraordinary creature' Constitution Hill 10-1 for Supreme after powerful win

Constitution Hill may be among the laziest horses at Seven Barrows but trainer Nicky Henderson will not mind too much after the four-year-old sauntered to a 14-length success in the 2m novice hurdle and earned quotes of 10-1 for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

After purchasing him from Warren Ewing and Barry Geraghty for owner Michael Buckley, Henderson found himself searching for the receipt two months later as Constitution Hill showed little at home.

However, when asked the question on the gallops, he would always deliver and the same was true at Sandown when Nico de Boinville made his move and the pair powered comfortably clear of Might I.

"He's the most extraordinary creature I've come across in years," said Henderson. "He will go back to his stable and go to sleep now.

"He ambles down at the start and holds the whole string up every morning when we're walking and trotting. After two months I phoned Warren and Barry and said, 'What on earth have you sold me? He's not even a racehorse'. But then when he pulls out and you press the button, he just disappears. He can't be fit as he's fatter than me.

"You love horses like that. We knew today the button worked. It's fascinating trying to work horses out, that's the fun of the game. I hope he's high class and he's definitely a chaser for the future. In ten years' time, when I'm 90, hopefully we'll be going strong."

The race was named in memory of owner Andy Stewart, whose family claimed third with the Paul Nicholls-trained Outlaw Joe.

Chepstow bound

Highland Hunter narrowly landed the London National for Nicholls on his way to next month's Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow.

"I've always trained him for the Welsh National," said Nicholls. "This was a pleasant surprise as I thought he'd need the run. He picked up well and stayed on strongly. A 4lb penalty for him at Chepstow will be no problem with a run under his belt and he has a big chance."

The trainer, who landed the Tingle Creek with Greaneteen, recorded a quickfire treble when Samarrive won the Listed handicap hurdle under Harry Cobden.
