'Everything could have been better!' - Jonjo O'Neill left cold by Petit Tonnerre
Tuesday: Market Rasen
Petit Tonnerre overcame jumping errors to win going away under a hands-and-heels ride, but trainer Jonjo O'Neill was left dissatisfied despite the four-year-old maintaining his unbeaten hurdling record on his first start for the yard.
The 4-5 favourite was purchased from France by JP McManus but failed to impress O'Neill on his British debut in the 2m½f handicap hurdle.
"Everything could have been better!" O'Neill said. "He's run and won, but he had to really, we'll see how he comes out of it and we'll take it from there."
Petit Tonnerre could run in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle or the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham, although connections are undecided about where he will go next.
Rider Jonjo O'Neill Jr said: "He's a good horse going forward, but he's still got a lot to learn. He's a big four-year-old and it looks to me as though he’s got a lot more growing to do."
One ride, one win
There were plenty of jockeys with just one ride at the meeting, but it was Aidan Coleman, Emma Smith-Chaston and Harry Bannister who made the most of their sole opportunity on the card.
Coleman landed the 2m½f maiden hurdle on the Olly Murphy-trained Fleurman, Smith-Chaston worked hard to get Micky Hammond's Desaray Girl up close home in the 2m4½f mares' handicap hurdle, while Bannister eased to victory on the Ben Case-trained Felton Bellevue in the 3m novice handicap chase.
