It is the end of an era with the news that Sally Hall, 78, has quit the training ranks after more than 40 years.

The niece of renowned Middleham trainer Sam Hall and top jumps trainer Charlie Hall, she was based at Brecongill stables near Middleham and the best horse she trained was the sprinter Hallgate, who went on to became a successful sire.

He won the Cornwallis Stakes as a juvenile and recorded three further successes as a three-year-old, including the Diadem Stakes, and was also placed in the Sprint Cup and Prix de l'Abbaye. Hall also won the John Smith's Cup in 1980 with Fine Sun.
