Enable boldly goes where no other British filly or mare had gone before
In winning Sunday's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Enable went where no other British-trained filly or mare had gone before by becoming the first to capture Europe's richest race.
Her trainer John Gosden would have been well aware of the task at hand having saddled Taghrooda (third in 2014), Great Heavens (sixth in 2012) and Dar Re Mi (fifth in 2009) in recent Arcs, while Ed Dunlop was responsible for Snow Fairy and Ouija Board filling third in 2011 and 2004.
Before Enable, Leggera had come closest to ending Britain's female Arc curse in 1998. Trained by Dunlop's father John, she pushed Sagamix to a neck and was also fourth the following year to the mighty Montjeu.
Another near-miss for British-trained females came in 1992 when the Clive Brittain-trained User Friendly, who like Enable had won the Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks as well as the St Leger, was beaten a neck by Subotica – two years before the high-class and well-fancied Salsabil ran no race at Longchamp, finishing tenth of 21 runners.
Sun Princess, trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson, also finished second in an Arc, going down to a Walter Swinburn-inspired All Along in the 1983 edition, while 4-1 second-favourite Park Top was a fast-finishing runner-up to Levmoss in 1969.
