They say a 'good start is half the battle' but for Gordon Elliott a good start proved to be the start of a bruising and bloody battle which he came out the wrong side of as he had three favourites beaten, two of which were odds-on.

It all started swimmingly. Usurp justified favouritism in the opening 2m maiden hurdle. At that stage, it looked like a four-timer was on the cards for Elliott but things quickly turned sour as Ball D'Arc took a crashing fall at the first fence in the 2m beginners chase, leaving Bryan Cooper with a suspected broken arm.
