Echoes of Mishriff as Eydon breaks maiden in the Listed Feilden Stakes
Thursday: Newmarket
The classy Mishriff burst on to the scene when winning a Listed race on the Rowley Mile in 2020 and two years on owner Prince Faisal looks to have unearthed another jewel in Eydon, who ran away with the featured Feilden Stakes.
Roger Varian's unconsidered 22-1 chance was the only maiden in the six-runner line-up but you would not have known it judging by the way he pulverised market leader and previous Listed race winner Masekela in the hands of David Egan.
Eydon, who was beaten twice on the all-weather at Newcastle, was cut to 20-1 (from 66) for the Cazoo Derby after his triumph in a race his sire Olden Times, also owned by Prince Faisal, won in 2001.
The Feilden Stakes has been won by Classic winners such as Golden Horn and Intello and winning trainer Roger Varian was not ruling anything in or out.
He said of the Dante Stakes entry: "We've always thought Eydon was a nice horse and full marks to Prince Faisal for persuading me to run him here rather than a maiden.
"It's great that he's by the owner's sire Olden Times, and he's so big, he's almost the size of Native Trail."
Egan said: "It took me until almost the peat moss gallop to pull him up, so he'll get further all right. "
Varian was completing a double after juvenile Tajalla justified 11-8 favouritism in the 5f novice Stakes under Andrea Atzeni.
The winner was very professional and was given an opening quote of 14-1 for the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot by Paddy Power.
Smullen remembered
Frances Crowley had to postpone plans to present the prize for the inaugural running of the mile handicap named in her late husband Pat Smullen's name a year ago, but made amends after Coase just lasted home in the second running.
There was a full turnout from the weighing room to show respect at the presentation of the prizes at a venue where Smullen won the 2,000 Guineas on Refuse To Bend in 2003.
The race was again sponsored by Smullen's friends, Ted and Sue Durcan, and the crowd was treated to a grandstand finish as Coase held the late swoop of Intellogent under Marco Ghiani.
Crowley said: It's great to be able to come this year as I couldn't travel a year ago due to all the Covid restrictions. Thanks to Ted and Sue Durcan, who are friends from our Dubai days, for sponsoring the race again.
"It was a nice surprise that all the jockeys came out afterwards and well done to Michael Wigham for winning the race."
Out in front
Former trainer Luca Cumani was at the Rowley Mile for the first time since 2019 to see his homebred Out From Under gain a deserved first win in the Alex Scott Maiden Stakes.
Jockeys wore black armbands all afternoon as a mark of respect for the death of Julie Cecil to whom Cumani had a link.
He said: "I was assistant to Henry and Julie between 1972 and 1975 and she was the Queen Of Newmarket. She knew everyone."
Trained by Harry and Roger Charlton, Out From Under was unsold at the sales in 2020 and Cumani decided to keep him in a partnership with Peter Brant.
He said: "He's not the best walker and didn't make his reserve, but he gallops well enough and he deserved that as he was unlucky not to win last year.
"He's out of our mare Koora, whose two-year-old we sold to Coolmore last year and has just been named Klondike."
Richard Kingscote had few problems in steering Out From Under home from Wodeton and the 8-11 favourite may tackle handicaps next.
Harry Charlton said: "That was overdue as he was unlucky twice last year. We could have a look at something like the Silver Bowl at Haydock in time. "
