Dudes and pigs - they all come alike to Baker and his team
George Baker's opinion of the two horses he brought to the meeting could scarcely have differed more, yet the result was the same, Drop Kick Murphi and Magnificent Madiba combining in successive races for a 32-1 double.
Baker could not have been more complimentary about Drop Kick Murphi, who won the nursery in the hands of Steve Drowne, describing him as “a lovely uncomplicated two-year-old - just a dude, with no quirks or foibles.”
However, when asked about Magnificent Madiba, who he was about to go and saddle for the amateur riders' handicap, he said that the three-year-old was an “absolute pig,” although he did warn that if he reproduced his sparkling work he was perfectly capable of winning such a race.
Magnificent Madiba, who had already been declared for a claimer at Lingfield on Wednesday, such was Baker's frustration, won in style and could well have a future after all.
Afterwards the trainer said: “This was the last chance saloon. He's worked like a half decent horse but has let us down every time he's been racing. But we thought enough of him to ask Simon Walker to come along to ride him, and he is the best in the country by a long way.”
Baker added: “The horse will have learned plenty today. He's a proper horse to look at, and maybe he's just raw and immature. I have to keep reminding myself that he's still a three-year-old. He won't go to Lingfield now. He's had a hard enough race and it wouldn't be fair to let him go for £8,000.”
