Dow snaps long losing run as Roundabout delivers magic performance for Marquand
Simon Dow ended a losing streak stretching back to January when Roundabout Magic swept to victory in the opening 5f handicap under Tom Marquand.
The Epsom trainer had endured a poor run of form with just six of his 35 runners since the resumption of racing finishing in the first three, and he was relieved to be back in the winner's enclosure.
"We were having a bit of bad luck but the horses were just running a bit below par so it's certainly nice to get one in the bag," Dow said. "Let's hope we've turned the corner now and this gives everyone at home a much needed confidence boost."
Of the six-year-old winner, Dow added: "He's an unbelievable little horse really. Every three months you think he's had enough of it but then he has a jump and a kick and he's back on it. He's won seven races round here and would have had a few more with a bit more luck."
Girl comes good
Marquand's good day continued when he got his timing spot on as Come On Girl cut down Champagne Supanova in the final yards of the Class 6 6f handicap.
Champagne Supanova set blistering early fractions and looked almost assured of victory turning for home but the tank soon emptied, allowing the Tony Carroll-trained filly in for a narrow head success.
The victory was a third on the afternoon for Marquand, following the successes of Roundabout Magic and Starman, and took the rider's tally to 15 winners over the past two weeks.
Johnson doubles up
It was another good day for Mark Johnston who recorded a double despite having only two runners on the card.
Bowman failed to make any impression when cast into deep water in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but bounced back with a performance of real promise in the first division of the 6f novice auction.
Army Of India then landed the second division after being pushed into the lead by jockey Franny Norton as soon as the gates opened, gaining what turned out to be an unassailable lead to score by seven and a half lengths.
