Double gives owner Donlon a fillip after Shan Blue setback
Thursday: Newbury
Colm Donlon, whose classy chaser Shan Blue is set for a spell on the sidelines after falling at Wetherby last week, got a boost when Silent Revolution and Silver Forever carried his distinctive yellow and blue colours to victory.
Donlon had hoped to run the Dan Skelton-trained Shan Blue at the course in this month's Ladbrokes Trophy, but news emerged on Tuesday he will be absent until 2022.
Fortunately, Silent Revolution obliged in the novice hurdle and then Silver Forever struck in the beginners' chase, sealing a treble for Paul Nicholls.
An owner for around 15 years, Donlon said: "It's been a disappointing and frustrating week, but you've got to take the positives out of it and Shan Blue is fine. Dan had a tough day on Sunday [when two horses died], so it shows you how bad things can get, but we've still got a nice horse in Shan to go to war with.
"That news on Tuesday and winning today shows the highs and lows of this game, and when you get a good day you've got to enjoy them because they're rare enough."
Nicholls credited pupil assistant Natalie Parker for her role in Silver Forever's victory, which came after 670 days off.
"Nat rides her every day and has been telling me all along she's as good as ever," the trainer said.
Stott's jumps bow
Group 1-winning jockey Kevin Stott is set for his first ride over jumps at Lingfield on Tuesday aboard Siroco Jo, who landed the handicap hurdle for conditional riders.
Ridden by Lorcan Williams and racing in the Frodon silks of Paul Vogt, Siroco Jo is in another handicap hurdle at Lingfield next week, but one restricted to Flat members of the weighing room.
Nicholls, whose daughter Megan is dating Stott, said: "Kevin has been schooling him at home.
"I've never had a runner in the Lingfield race before, but Kevin is a good jockey and it'll be a bit of fun. Meg isn't allowed to ride in it because she's got a jumps licence along with her Flat licence."
Stott made headlines last year when winning the Diamond Jubilee on Hello Youmzain at Royal Ascot.
Terrier thrills
Alan King thinks plenty of the Charles Dingwall-owned Nina The Terrier, who impressed in the novice hurdle for mares, but that might not have always been the case.
"Charles loved her at the sales, but I wasn't quite in the same camp!" King joked. "I think we'll think of the Cheltenham Festival and work backwards now though."
Dingwall added: "She suits her name doesn't she? She's got a big, generous heart and is full of courage, but Alan did say at the sales, 'What have you bought there?'"
High for Mountain camp
Stoney Mountain, who cost a six-figure sum at a dispersal sale last year, won for the first time since in the Pertemps qualifier.
"He was a good horse a couple of years ago, but everything went wrong last season," said trainer Jamie Snowden.
"He'll definitely be able to build on this – as long as the handicapper doesn't overreact."
