The Tuesday without Ruby is like the weekend without Saturday. Doesn't work, never will.

Rewind 115 days and he looked the first non-runner of the festival, yet here he is walking out of the weighing room at 1.21pm without any hint of a limp. He struts out on to the stage the way Bruce Forsyth used to – owning it, loving it, born for it. Every eye drawn to him. Nice to see you, to see you . . . nice.

There is a hint of a smile, however. That's new.
