Did we see an Epsom winner? Read our expert opinions about Wednesday's trials
The fillies' trial didn't look like the strongest beforehand and I think that still holds true, with Magic Wand and Forever Together, who would be down the Ballydoyle pecking order, clearly the best two in the race. O'Brien holds stronger cards for the Oaks in Happily and September and it was probably a pointer to their chances. I would be more interested in Vase winner Young Rascal at Epsom. He beat some solid Group 3 horses quite comfortably once he realised he could go though the gap and shapes as though there is plenty more to come. I could see William Haggas's colt being placed and he is a plausible winner if Saxon Warrior fails to answer the stamina question.

Magic Wand was a visually impressive winner of the Cheshire Oaks but she benefited from a well-judged front-running ride and it did not appear to be a strong renewal. More will be required to figure at Epsom and odds of 16-1 for the Oaks appear fair rather than generous. Saxon Warrior sets an exacting standard in the Derby but Young Rascal earned a shot at Classic glory with a decisive victory in the Chester Vase, where he was value for more than the half-length winning margin. Young Rascal, who was taking a significant step up in class having won a maiden last month, quickened well once in the clear, is on a sharp upward curve and is a guaranteed stayer, which makes the 14-1 on offer for the Derby an appealing each-way price.

It might be unwise to rule out the runner-up in both trials, with Dee Ex Bee and Forever Together running encouraging races, albeit they would obviously have a bit to find with Young Rascal and Magic Wand at Epsom. Remember, though, the Vase provided the winner of the Derby last year – and it wasn’t the winner but the runner-up Wings Of Eagles. He turned Chester form around with Venice Beach at Epsom, and Dee Ex Bee already has experience of the track having won there last year and finished third in the Derby trial last month. He looks solid and attractive each-way at 33-1.
