Delta Work proves too good for Mortal in Neville Hotels Novice Chase

If Gordon Elliott had a scorecard in his hand, one would imagine he’d give only a six or seven out of 10 to his now dual Grade 1 winner Delta Work.

That goes some way to illustrating just how well the unbeaten chaser did to pull eight lengths clear of his rivals given the performance could be described as good, rather than excellent.

After a sticky round of jumping, Delta Work loomed into contention rounding the home bend under Davy Russell, who had to get serious enough in the finish before coasting home unchallenged at the line.

In leading home a Gigginstown-owned 1-2-3, Delta Work provided the champion owners with a fifth success from the previous eight runnings of the race, while Elliott was making it three from four after Shattered Love (2017) and No More Heroes (2015).

The trainer summarised: “He was probably lucky as Ben Dundee nearly brought him down early. Davy said he’s gone very idle and he wasn’t doing a lot from the second last up until after the last.”

Elliott added: “He also said the ground was as quick as he’d wanted it now as he was just a little bit careful early. He’s a lovely horse. I put a hood on him and he’s actually gone very relaxed, which is great so I’ll leave it on.

“Look, we were lucky that Joseph’s horse [Mortal] made a mistake at the last but Davy was happy that he’d plenty left in the tank at that stage.”

Future targets

Most bookmakers shaved a point or two off Delta Work’s RSA Chase price, with Paddy Power going 6-1 (from 7) and Boylesports offering just 5s. Elliott confirmed that’s the route he will go.

“I’d imagine he’ll come back here [for the Flogas Novice Chase in February] and he’s versatile trip-wise. He’s a good horse – he was a 150-rated hurdler – and he loves a battle as well,” he added.
