Defoe scores on debut as Varian saddles double on rare trip

Roger Varian may well be asked to reconsider his policy of sending horses to west Wales.

Before yesterday, the Newmarket trainer had saddled just seven runners at Ffos Las in the last five years, although the two that Varian sent on the trek along the M4 - who both won - may force a rethink.

Certainly he is unlikely to get any complaints from his assistant Will Johnson, who saddled the victorious Monotype and Defoe.
