Crowley flying high in bid for winners
Record monthly total in his sights
Jim Crowley flew off to Chelmsford in his helicopter after one winner from his seven rides at Brighton – looking for the success that would give him a 45th winner for the month.
After riding his 44th in September with the success of Onehelluvatouch in the 1m2f handicap, Crowley said: "It would be great to beat the record set by Sir Gordon Richards. That is my target."
Crowley was right that Richards posted 45 winners in August 1949, but the Racing Post's John Randall pointed out: "Fred Archer also achieved 45, in June 1884, and it won't be possible to say that Crowley has definitely broken the record even if he surpasses 45, because, unlike seasonal and career records, the record for the most winners in a month by a jockey or trainer in Britain is not something that anyone has ever researched."
