Legends Of War booked his ticket for the Coventry Stakes when impressing in a £15,000 novice put on especially by Arena Racing Company at the request of trainers looking for a Royal Ascot launchpad.

A 900,000gns breeze-up purchase from Mayfield Stables barely a month ago, the son of Scat Daddy arrived at the course with a reputation to match his price, but John Gosden was at pains to point out that he was not wound up for his first appearance and insisted he would be much better with the benefit of experience.

He faced strong pressure in the market from San Donato, a 500,000gns yearling and Roger Varian's first juvenile runner of the season, yet went to the front readily and then quickened right away for a four-length win.
