Aidan O'Brien may have been playing it relatively cool after winning his eighth 2,000 Guineas, but there was no disguising Les Eyre's satisfaction after he landed his first Thirsk Hunt Cup.

He fielded calls of congratulation following Cote D'Azur's all-the-way win from a wide draw under PJ McDonald in the £25,000 feature.

And Eyre, 73 and in his second spell as a trainer in Britain, said: "I've always wanted to win this race, it's been on my wishlist as I trained at the top of the hill for years. But I don't think I ever had a runner, something always seemed to go wrong.
