It paid to keep it simple. You wouldn't pick two finer men than Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore to rely on in an important race and better still if they team up with a champion two-year-old by supersire Galileo.

Those who backed Churchill might have got a bit panicky when Barney Roy and Al Wukair threatened to loom late up the centre of the track, but the Coolmore colt was well in command and never looked like surrendering.

The question now is where next? The Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas may seem a penalty kick and Churchill would not be the first Ballydoyle colt to tread that path, with Rock Of Gibraltar, Henrythenavigator and Gleneagles completing the Classic double.
