Former pony racer William Carver achieved a dream start to his career in the apprentice ranks when he got Know The Truth home in the maiden sprint.

The 17-year-old is in the right place to build his career as he is attached to winning trainer Andrew Balding, who has long nurtured young talent including Carver's mentor Oisin Murphy.

Many members of the 7lb claimer's family, including his mother Catherine, made the journey from West Sussex to witness his first appearance in the saddle.
