Captain Cattistock bounces back to take top honours in the Edinburgh National
Saturday: Musselburgh
Captain Cattistock prevailed in a gruelling duel to the line in the Edinburgh National to claim the biggest win of his career under Liam Harrision.
The nine-year-old carried bottom weight to bounce back from a disappointing seasonal debut at Haydock in December when pulled up by Paddy Brennan, whom trainer Fergal O'Brien credited for the success.
"It was a great ride from Liam, but what won that race was the fact that Paddy pulled him up at Haydock," O'Brien said.
"Paddy could have slogged on for the prize-money but it wasn't the right thing on the day and it's ensured the horse could come back right today; so the win is really down to Paddy.
"We're delighted. The horse did great for us last year and won over four miles at Cheltenham, so we had a plan today and he just travelled and jumped great. We took advantage of a low weight and he's very genuine and honest."
Unlike at Haydock, Captain Cattistock showed no signs of trouble in Musselburgh's feature race, pulling to a five-length lead down the home straight before holding off a strong late challenge from The Wolf, who ate into the lead but fell short by three-quarters of a length.
Bardenstown bounces back
Bardenstown Lad enhanced his credentials ahead of the Cheltenham Festival with a ready success in the Scottish Stayers' Novices' Hurdle, handing jockey Brian Hayes his first winner at Musselburgh.
The seven-year-old made a winning return from a three-month break to claim his fourth win over hurdles and make the trip from Ireland worthwhile with his 11-length victory. His price was shortened to 14-1 for the Albert Bartlett on March 18.
