Capital gains: New London cut to 14-1 for Derby after impressing for Godolphin
Wednesday: Newmarket
Charlie Appleby and William Buick dominated day two of the Craven meeting much as they had done day one, and as well as landing the feature with Native Trail they look to have a live Cazoo Derby hope on their hands in the shape of New London.
The Godolphin trainer-and-jockey combination have racked up five wins across the two days and New London was arguably one of the most impressive when putting market rival Aldous Huxley in the shade in the 1m2f novice.
The son of Dubawi was cut to 14-1 (from 20) for the Derby by Paddy Power after powering out of the Dip to score by two and a half lengths. The winner was returning to the scene of his win over the same trip as a juvenile at end of last season and could well take the Adayar route to Epsom by lining up in the Listed Derby Trial at Lingfield next month.
Appleby said: "Over the past couple of weeks we've been a bit muted about pitching colts like this into Derby trials but I was delighted with the way he hit the rising ground. We'll take in a trial now and we'll see how he is around Lingfield. Even if he gets beat he will learn plenty and that will tell us if he's a Derby horse or not."
The pair later added the closing three-year-old handicap to their haul when Tranquil Nights ran out a comfortable winner of the mile contest.
Maisie on the mark
Groom Maisie Hainey has looked after greats such as Too Darn Hot and Palace Pier during her time with the Gosdens, and she looks to have unearthed another classy type in the shape of Francesco Clemente, who ran out a game winner of the Wood Ditton Stakes.
The traditional mile contest for newcomers was going the way of Clarehaven for the second year running following the win of Peter The Great a year ago, and the son of Dubawi can be marked up on this as he was drawn widest of all in stall one.
Hainey, who also collected the £100 prize for the best turned out, said: "I only started doing Francesco Clemente late last year and he's always been the sort to do better as a three-year-old. I also now look after a pair of two-year-olds, including a Roaring Lion colt who is a nice type."
Joint-trainer Thady Gosden said of the winner: "He will get further in time but we may not rush to step him up in trip just yet. He's a nice type for the second half of the season."
Varian victorious again
Roger Varian took the opening 7f fillies' maiden for the fifth time in the last decade when Qipco 1,000 Guineas entry Ameynah scored easily to give David Egan an overdue win at the track.
The even-money chance was cut to 25-1 (from 50) by Paddy Power for the first fillies' Classic after pulverising newcomer Enshrine to confirm the promise of her debut second at the track last October.
Varian, who was registering his first victory of the Flat season, won the race with subsequent Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes winner Sheikha Reika in 2018, and his latest victor could easily be a stakes horse according to the successful jockey.
Egan said: "Ameynah is a lovely filly and I liked her when I rode her here last year. She'll improve on that and will definitely get a mile. I don't know what the plans are, but the 1,000 Guineas may be a big ask. However, she's a surefire stakes winner."
Meehan fined
The Brian Meehan-trained Gulf was declared a non-runner in the 7f fillies' maiden at 9.38am due to the going, which was unchanged. Meehan was fined £500 as he had made the filly a non-runner after 9am on the day of racing without an acceptable reason.
Hills hopes hit
Qipco 1,000 Guineas entry Allayaali was all but ruled out of the fillies' Classic after disappointing in a gallop before racing.
Ridden by Jim Crowley, the Charlie Hills-traind filly tracked two senior stablemates in a seven furlong exercise but was unable to reel them in when given the office in the last two furlongs.
The daughter of Dark Angel, who was runner-up in the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes last time out, is a general 33-1 chance for the 1,000 Guineas.
Hills said: "We came here to find out if she was a Guineas horse, but after that we'll probably look elsewhere. She's been in season lately which could be an excuse, but she hasn't yet come in her coat. There's a Listed race in a couple of weeks she could run in, but it's a long season."
