A smooth but shock victory for Tiger Roll in the Boyne Hurdle has prompted our experts to consider whether the popular nine-year-old can successfully defend his Grand National crown.

He's an amazing little horse who continues to prove people wrong, but I couldn't have him for last year's National and find it difficult to see him doing a Red Rum off 9lb higher. Yes, he looked in splendid nick at Navan, but that was an average Grade 2 hurdle and I don't think it has much bearing on his Aintree chances.

Last year's National was one of the most disappointing I've seen, with so many fancies simply not getting involved. Added to that, he barely saw out the trip, and things should be much tougher come April.
