Callan back in business as classy Tatsumaki keeps unbeaten record in sales race

Neil Callan recorded his biggest win since returning from Hong Kong in the summer when the impressive Tatsumaki ran away with the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

The 6f contest is restricted to horses purchased at certain Tattersalls sales and the 16,000gns that owner Ahmed Bintooq paid in 2020 looked a bargain after his colt picked up just over £81,000 for his trouble.

The son of Charming Thought was always travelling best up the middle in the 28-strong field, which split into two groups and had plenty in hand to see off 15-8 favourite Fearby.

Winning trainer Marco Botti said of his unbeaten juvenile: "Fair play to Neil, who's always said this colt was the best he's sat on since he came back from Hong Kong. He could well get further and even make up into a Guineas horse as he was not stopping.

"I don't think we'll run him again this year but he seems to handle all ground and it's great the owner only only gave 16,000gns for him."

Cash is king

There was money for Cash before his debut in the mile maiden and it was well placed as Jamie Spencer came from last to first to deny Ghaiyyath's brother Al Nafir.

The 8-1 chance was continuing the good run of US owner Earle Mack, who has just three horses in training in Britain but could have a smart one for 2022.

David Simcock trains him and said: "Cash is a lovely, big horse and we don't have many of this make, so it's nice that he's won well. I don't think we'll run him again this year, but he's a nice type for next year."

Spencer doubled up just 35 minutes later when Via Sistina also came from the clouds to bag the 1m2f fillies' handicap for Joe Tuite.

The 12-1 chance was an ideal mount for the former champion jockey as she had been too keen in a Listed event in France last time.

Tuite's head lad Chris Martin said: "We needed that as things have been a bit quiet, but it's nice to get one on the board especially at Newmarket."

Boy on track

Roger Varian's Darley Dewhurst Stakes contender Bayside Boy had a feel of the surroundings when paddock schooling prior to his clash with the unbeaten Native Trail back on the Rowley Mile next Saturday.

Winner of the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster last time, the son of New Bay seemed relaxed when having a few spins around the pre-parade ring before the first race in a red hood.
