Buick shows who's King with his first win of the year in Britain
Saturday: Lingfield
William Buick kicked off his working day with a spin on champion two-year-old Native Trail on the Newmarket gallops and ended it with a first domestic win of the year on King Of Time in the mile novice stakes.
The Charlie Appleby-trained son of Kingman justified heavy support into 4-11 favourite from 4-7 in the morning to get last year's jockeys' championship runner-up on the board and supplement a debut win at the track last month, coming with a late thrust in the straight to deny the also-penalised Aldhaja and 50-1 chance Royal Aviation.
Buick said: "Native Trail felt very good this morning and he seems to have wintered very well. I rode him a canter yesterday and breezed him this morning and he seems in top shape."
Clutterbuck double
Rhys Clutterbuck went to the top of the all-weather apprentice championship with a double at the Surrey track completed by Cool Spirit in the 6f handicap.
The 3-1 favourite was extending the recent good run at the track of Yorkshire-based David Griffiths and was backing up a recent win at Kempton to boot.
Clutterback, who kicked off his brace with He's A Latchico in the opening 1m4f handicap, said: "It's the first time I've been at the top of the table and it's quite an achievement, I would think. I thought I would keep it simple on this fellow and it's paid off."
The only downside for the rider was a three-day ban for interference in the opener (March 26-28).
Mohaafeth the star turn
By far the best horse on show at the meeting appeared before racing started when the classy Mohaafeth enjoyed a racecourse gallop ahead of a crack at the Group 1 Dubai Turf at Meydan in a fortnight's time.
Jim Crowley, who did not even have a ride on the card, called in to partner the classy son of Frankel over a mile with stablemate Irish Admiral (Cieren Fallon).
Trainer William Haggas and Shadwell racing manager Richard Hills looked on as last year's Royal Ascot winner powered about seven lengths clear passing the winning post.
Haggas said afterwards: "Mohaafeth needed that and hopefully that will have put him right for Dubai in two weeks' time. We've always had the Dubai Turf in mind as a starting point for him."
Mohaafeth is one of five runners scheduled to represent the Newmarket stable on Dubai World Cup night. The trainer added: "We also hope to run My Oberon in the Dubai Turf and have Alenquer and Dubai Honour in the Sheema Classic. Grocer Jack will head for the Dubai World Cup itself."
