Like the Cadbury Creme Egg, Britain's Guineas trials are not around for long. Just four days after Newmarket hosted the first, Newbury staged the last, the season of spring-sighters wrapped up in a flash, much like Native Trail's Craven Stakes.
There's an extremely good chance the 2,000 Guineas champion galloped up the Rowley Mile under a red-hot jockey on Wednesday, but it seems unlikely we have seen many serious Classic contenders. Richard Fahey and Perfect Power's owner must quickly decide whether the Greenham Stakes winner is one of them.
He certainly looked a high-class horse in winning the Watership Down-backed Greenham on Saturday, yet we already knew he was smart; no horse can claim the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes without being a proper force. The problem is both those tests are framed towards juveniles who go on to become sprinters. Perfect Power did not necessarily look like a textbook speed machine at Newbury, but what we heard in the ensuing minutes was not quite in sync with what we had seen.
