Bryony Frost beats the floods before making a splash in Norfolk
Bryony Frost had a water jump to negotiate even before she got to the Norfolk track with a flood across the A1065 which stretches from Newmarket to Fakenham, but sank the opposition on arrival with a double for trainer Lucy Wadham.
Riding the topically-named Admiral Barratry in the 2m5f handicap chase, Frost settled her partner off a fierce early pace set by favourite Golden Whisky before setting sail for home on the last circuit.
Frost said: "We had to drive through a flood on the way here which was a bit tricky but were glad we had a four-by-four to get through it. Thankfully it was worth it and I came up here after riding out for Lucy in Newmarket so it's been a great day for the team."
The Grade 1-winning rider added: "I had to sit and suffer and let him find his feet early as they went quick enough but he jumped well out of the ground which helped. That was good planning by Lucy and he enjoyed the step up in trip."
Frost and Wadham completed a double when Shantung made all to record her second win over jumps in the 2m mares' handicap hurdle.
Impressed with her the performance, Frost said: "She changed her legs on the inside bend turning for home without me even asking her and really ran to the line."
Alarm call
A 5.30am call from clerk of the course David Hunter to say the meeting was on gave Wiltshire trainer Seamus Mullins the green light to hit the road with Sheldon, who made the 400-mile round trip a worthwhile one as he registered his first win in the 2m maiden hurdle.
Hunter's early call allowed the even-money chance to get to the track well in advance of the second race on the card in which he came out best in a late duel with front-runner Kildimo.
Claimer Kevin Jones was seen to good effect on the chestnut, who was bringing decent placed form to the table and may be even better going up in trip.
Mullins said: "It takes us around four and a half hours to get here so an early call suited us and we love coming here as the prize-money is very good.
"Sheldon may not have been in love with the track but will have learned plenty from that and there are bigger fish to fry with him later on."
