All eyes may have been focused on Cheltenham but there was no stealing Lady Buttons' thunder as Yorkshire's leading lady sent Doncaster into a frenzy with her fifth success from six starts on her beloved Town Moor.

Equally adept over hurdles as she is over fences and deadly over two or two and a half miles, there are few who can match her versatility and trainer Phil Kirby felt this repeat win in the Grade 2 Yorkshire Rose Mares' Hurdle was perhaps her best performance yet.

"I didn't feel the pressure today because I thought she was as well as I've ever had her at home and I thought she'd win everywhere today," said Kirby, who stayed ice cool as those around him revelled in the occasion.

"Things probably didn't pan out in her favour because it turned into a sprint but the top and bottom of it is she's quicker than them."

While this was a day to enjoy the moment, it was inevitable to ask what might be next for Lady Buttons, who was cut to 16-1 (from 20-1) with Betfair Sportsbook for the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Kirby added: "The mares' race looks particularly hot and the owners would like to run in the Champion Chase. We're probably better going to Aintree to run in the same race we were second in last year [Red Rum Handicap Chase], but I do think her last two runs have been as good as any.

"She'll get all the entries but we'll do what's right for her at the time."

Owner-breeder Jayne Sivills led the high-spirited celebrations in a winner's enclosure awash with the purple and white carried by her remarkable ten-year-old.

She said: "I rode every hurdle with her and then shouted her home. The following she's got is amazing and she's the horse of a lifetime.

"I said last year I'd have gone for the Champion Chase, but Phil is the trainer and places her in the right races every time. We're guided by him but I think she's a lot better chaser than hurdler and I'd like to have a go at the Champion Chase."

There was a sting in the tail for stand-in winning rider Sean Quinlan, who picked up a four-day ban for edging across his rivals after hitting the front after the last, but he was happy to take that on the chin.

Quinlan said: "There was a lot of pressure but she's the best filly I've ever ridden. When she hits the front she's a little bit lairy and was more comfortable when she got the rail. I'll take four days to win a race like that."
