Brighton was seemingly the only place in the south of Britain where –for a reasonable part of the day at least – the sun was shining, as of course it should do in August.

The town's racecourse got its three-day festival under way and drew a sizeable crowd for an eight-race card, although umbrellas did go up as rain eased in through the afternoon.

In the Hobgoblin Brighton Mile, one of the highlights of the year, Cricklewood Green was seeking to follow up his 2016 victory, but while he ran well, fourth spot was all he could muster. The spoils went to Lord Clenaghcastle, as so many do here for local trainer Gary Moore.
