Boynton fends off War Decree in battle of the superpowers
It really is like the good old days. One Godolphin horse, one Ballydoyle horse, the two of them clear of the rest in yesterday's Superlative Stakes. This time it was Godolphin's glory with Boynton proving too good for War Decree after a battle that left both their Classic claims enhanced.
Last Saturday it was a similar story with the Charlie Appleby-trained Hawkbill denying Aidan O'Brien, Ryan Moore and The Gurkha in the Coral-Eclipse. On Friday the outcome had been different with Alice Springs coming over from Ireland to beat two Godolphin fillies and their red-hot favourite Usherette in the Falmouth Stakes.
Like Alice Springs, War Decree was hugely popular with punters, so much so he was sent off evens favourite, but despite pulling five lengths clear of the third he was three-quarters of a length behind $750,000 purchase Boynton.
