Big Country was cut to a general 12-1 second favourite (from 20) for the Ladbrokes Lincoln on March 24 after running out a gutsy winner of the only recognised Trial for the straight mile contest at Doncaster.

Mick Appleby's strapping type overcame concerns about his fitness and a wide draw to hold off Pactolus in the straight to set up a dream trip to Town Moor for members of the Horse Watchers syndicate, which includes TV pundits Martin and Chris Dixon.

The latter said: "That was a bonus as we thought he'd need the run but Luke Morris has given him a peach of ride from where he was drawn in stall ten. He fired him out, got an early position and powered home.
