Who needs a retainer when you can hitch a lift on the London Prize success story and nab a £75,000 race?

Had Fran Berry still been stable jockey to Ralph Beckett, he would probably have been anywhere bar here on Saturday as the trainer had runners at five other meetings.

But the pair split up last month, allowing the now-freelance Berry to take the mount on a fast-improving stayer who would have been one of the favourites for the Northumberland Plate had he made the cut.
