Sunday: Exeter

Trainer Ben Pauling said he is happy to take his time with Bangers And Cash following his victory in the feature 3m handicap chase.

The six-year-old made all and finished strong to pull 14 lengths clear of the rest of the field on his second start of the season.

"He travelled sweetly and was well positioned throughout, but the winning margin was quite flattering," said Pauling. "He jumped very well and hopefully he’s a young chaser who can go up the ranks in these three-mile plus staying chases."

Pauling, who enjoyed his 41st winner of the campaign, believes the Devon track contributed to Bangers And Cash’s success.

He added: "He took a good blow at Wetherby and it was a stop-start race, whereas he was suited to the end-to-end gallop at Exeter. If you gallop all the way up the hill here you can put a bit of a distance between you and the rest of the field, and that’s what he did."

As regards his next assignment, Pauling said: "He’s rated only 116, so there’s plenty of time. I don’t think he’s ready for the marathons yet, but it’s probably where he’ll end up in time.

"We’ll take it one step at a time and go for something similar as long as he’s not put up too much by the handicapper."

Family affair

The father-son partnership of Gary and Jamie Moore continued their fine form as Black Gerry landed the 2m3f novice handicap chase.

The victory, which was Black Gerry’s third in four starts, came a day after Goshen landed the Coral Hurdle at Ascot for the trainer and jockey combination.

More joy

After ending a spell of six months without victory on Saturday, Venetia Williams enjoyed a second winner in as many days when Djelo landed the 2m2½f handicap hurdle.
