What was already a big day for Mitchell Bastyan turned into a spectacular afternoon for the 18-year-old as he celebrated a first success under rules thanks to Veauce De Sivola’s comfortable success in the 2m7½f handicap chase.

A graduate from point-to-points, Bastyan had taken 11 rides without success under rules as an amateur before Monday, but made it first time lucky as a conditional on the Brian Barr-trained eight-year-old, who was always in pole position under a positive ride.

“He jumped immaculately and was brilliant to me,” said Bastyan, whose only previous success came in the pointing field.
