Barrier trial winner Illuminazione upsets red-hot 1-5 favourite Honey Girl

Tuesday: Dundalk

The value of barrier trials was seen to spectacular effect in the mile maiden as Illuminazione was too good for 107-rated Honey Girl.

Having finished sixth to Inspiral in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, Honey Girl was 1-5 to open her account at the sixth attempt but she was unable to shake off the newcomer from the Joseph O'Brien stable who had won a barrier trial at the venue last week.

O'Brien was impressed with what he saw, saying: "I'm very happy with the win and she will either go for a winners' race or a stakes race next."

Just a nose separated Illuminazione and Honey Girl at the line and they pulled nicely clear of the third home, Footsteps In Qatar.

Happy hunting ground

The opening 5f handicap was worth €22,000 in prize-money and it was course specialist Harry's Bar who swooped late under 10lb claimer Adam Caffrey to land the spoils.

Harry's Bar had contested the Betway All-Weather Sprint Championship Final at Newcastle on Good Friday and was last seen finishing down the field in the Rockingham at the Curragh, but a return to his beloved Dundalk reignited the flame.

The 105-rated sprinter has now won five of his eight starts at Dundalk.

Bog strikes again

After going 29 races without a win, The Bog Bank finally won at Bellewstown last month and she backed it up with another win under James Ryan in the mile handicap.

The Tom McCourt-trained 11-2 shot stayed on strongly to beat Royal Scholar by two and a quarter lengths.
