Punters were left shocked at Wolverhampton as Haayem recorded victory at 80-1 with an in-running high of 250-1 recorded on the Betfair Exchange.

The four-year-old showed only minor promise on debut when beaten 20 lengths, and finishing eighth. He looked to he heading for another midfield effort when jockey Luke Catton began to push him as they turned into the straight.

But Haayem continued to run on and was eventually able to snatch the lead from the well-fancied Business on the line.

The win provides Hannon with a second winner on the card, having won Saturday's featuring Bombardier-sponsored Lady Wulfruna Stakes with Urban Icon.

Appleby's Loxley holds off fast-finishing Defoe in Dubai

Defoe came within a short-head of making a winning seasonal return with the Charlie Appleby-trained Loxley able to hold on for a surprise success in the Dubai City Of Gold, sponsored by Emirates SkyCargo.

Loxley had looked a smart prospect early on his career, he was sent off at just 6-1 in the 2018 St Leger but finished tenth behind Kew Gardens. This season, he had been well beaten in two starts at Meydan but put in a much improved performance under Mickael Barzalona to claim a second win at Group 2 level.

He made his surge to the line in the final two furlongs and kept on bravely to hold off the fast-finishing Defoe, with Mountain Hunter in third.

The victory gives Appleby a second win on Super Saturday, following Barney Roy's win in the Jebel Hatta.

Defoe looked to be struggling in the home straight but picked up strongly at the finish, before switching wide to close on Loxley before being narrowly denied on his first start since July.

Barzalona said: "He's a nice horse and he travelled a bit stronger today. I was able to find a way to sit him in behind then when he got a clear run, he was ready to go. He did the job well."

Loxley was shortened to 9-1 with bet365 for the Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night while Defoe was unchanged at 8-1. Godolphin runner Ghaiyyath is the current 2-1 favourite.

From Class 4 handicaps to Group 1 win, Matterhorn shines in Dubai

Matterhorn capped off a phenomenal rise to the top level as he took round three of the Al Maktoum Challenge, sponsored by Emirates Airline, at Meydan.

Matterhorn was rated 80 in December 2018 when trained by Mark Johnston before reeling off a five-timer in all-weather handicaps.

At Pattern level, his best successes came in the Easter Classic and Windsor's Midsummer Stakes but he took his form to a new level on Super Saturday.

On his second start for Salem bin Ghadayer, Matterhorn dominated from the front in the Group 1 event on dirt, with Mickael Barzalona able to push out the son of Raven's Pass to a wide-margin win.

He is now as short as 6-1 for the Dubai World Cup.

Barney Roy cut for Dubai Turf after impressive Meydan win

Godolphin ace Barney Roy returned to his Group 1-winning best after sealing an impressive success in the Jebel Hatta, sponsored by Emirates Airlines.

The six-year-old was one of the stars of the 2017 season, finishing second in the 2,000 Guineas before going one better in the St James's Palace Stakes when with Richard Hannon.

But, following a failed career as a stallion, he has slowly begun to show his old sparkle and on Super Saturday at Meydan he looked as good as ever, leading home a 1-2-3-4 for Godolphin.

Kept towards the rear as they turned for home, William Buick asked Barney Roy for his challenge and he accelerated into the lead to hold off stablemate Magic Lily. It was Barney Roy's second top-level win and first since joining Charlie Appleby.

"We're very happy with it," said Buick. "He had a tricky draw in 12 so we had to ride him the way we did. Although there were a few horses in the race that had a little chance, from the position we were in, we still had to pass them all.

"He travelled very strongly, I brought him out early in the straight and, when he picked up, he settled the race quite quickly. He's got a huge cruising speed and loves a flat track like Meydan. When he's out in the open air and running he's quite exuberant."

He was cut from 5-1 to 5-2 for the Dubai Turf on World Cup night, March 28, where he could take on Almond Eye in the Group 1 event.
