Wincanton went to Warwick, but the result remained the same as Paul Nicholls bagged the feature when El Bandit made a very promising winning debut over fences in the 3m1½f novice chase.

Apart from a rather untidy leap three out, Sam Twiston-Davies’s mount was close to foot perfect and had the prize in the bag from some way out as he sailed clear of Shelford without being posed any serious questions.

Nicholls said: “We've had this race in mind for him ever since he was beaten in the Pertemps final over hurdles at Cheltenham and I think he'll make a lovely chaser in the autumn, but that's it for now as he will be out in the field tomorrow for his summer break.”
