Atzeni all smiles on the Downs after landing brilliant Oaks day treble
What a week it has been for Andrea Atzeni. On Sunday he registered his first Group 1 winner of the season on Zabeel Prince in the Prix d'Ispahan and at Epsom he stole the limelight with a 494-1 treble in successive races.
Gossiping, a 10-1 shot, kicked off the treble with a five-length win in the 1m½f handicap before 11-1 winner Defoe landed the Coronation Cup. The well-backed Mountain Angel, who was 9-2 in the morning but sent off at 11-4, topped it all off in the 1m2f handicap.
Reflecting on a magnificent six days, Atzeni said: "It's been a fantastic week, the horses have been running well and I've been on a lot of nice horses – Defoe was great.
