Atalanta's a golden boy for relieved Tom Greatrex after first winner of 2021
Tom Greatrex was thrilled to ride his first winner of 2021 in the 6f handicap, particularly as it came on old favourite Atalanta's Boy.
"He's a bit of a legend and that's the sixth time I've won on him," said Greatrex, the only jockey to have scored on the David Menuisier-trained gelding.
The son of Lambourn trainer Warren, Greatrex partnered his first Group winner last summer when Santosha struck in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot and said of his lean spell: "The boss Mr [Roger] Charlton hasn't had many runners and the ground has been on the quick side, so there haven't been many big fields.
"Chances have been limited, but I'm happy grafting away, while having some rain might help a bit with fields."
The 22-year-old apprentice needs 16 winners to become a fully fledged professional and added: "My target is to ride out my claim and other than that sit on as many nice horses and ride as many winners as I can.
"It sounds pretty simple and basic, but it's the name of the game, so it's what I'm aiming for."
Fine start for Alpinista
The Listed Daisy Warwick Fillies' Stakes was won by the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Alpinista, who runs in the familiar silks of leading owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing.
Richard Frisby, Rausing's racing manager, said: "I haven't spoken to Kirsten yet, but she'll be thrilled.
"Sir Mark has got a nice programme for this filly and it's great we started off in a positive way."
Asked if that programme included a Group 1, Frisby added: "Sir Mark has his eye on one, but that's for him to tell you!"
Treble for red-hot Marquand
Tom Marquand has a Qipco 1,000 Guineas ride for William Haggas and Cheveley Park Stud at Newmarket on Sunday and warmed up for that by steering those connections' Canonized to success in the 5f novice.
Marquand, "buzzing" about his Classic date with Sacred, also won the 5f handicap on Warrior Brave, whose owners – The Horse Watchers – are eyeing the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot.
They include Laurence Bellman, whose Orin Swift – "a lovely, bonny horse" – landed the 1m6f handicap under the rider.
Morrison quids in
The result of the mile handicap was not lost on Hughie Morrison, whose Marsabit won, beating 13-8 favourite Tasfeeq into third.
"I tried to buy Tasfeeq but didn't have enough money!" an amused Morrison joked.
"I didn't even get far enough to be underbidder as he made 115,000gns, but he was top of our list for a client."
Johnston flying high
Mark Johnston never tires of winners at Goodwood and recorded another thanks to Qaader, too tough and talented for his rivals in the mile conditions stakes.
Johnston flew down from his North Yorkshire base and said: "It's a long way from home but we like it when we get here.
"This horse was second in the Coventry last year so we thought he was a Pattern horse and hopefully he's not far off that now he's found the winning habit again."
