Few trainers manage to improve horses formerly in the care of Dan Skelton but Sophie Leech can take a step forward after Applesandpierres turned the 2m1f handicap hurdle into a procession.

The ten-year-old had been shrewdly claimed for £6,000 by Leech’s husband and assistant Christian after finishing runner-up in a lowly seller at Hexham this month.

That was clearly money well spent as he always travelled with ease before jumping to the front three hurdles from home and scoring in eased-down style by 18 lengths from Xpo Universel under conditional rider Sean Houlihan.
