It is the big decisions that make all the difference at the top level and on a sublime summer afternoon Charlie Appleby could bask in the satisfaction that he had got one of the biggest calls of his career absolutely spot on.

The big calls earn the biggest rewards and having watched Blue Point like a hawk since his King's Stand Stakes success on Tuesday, he decided an audacious Royal Ascot double in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes was on – and how right he was.

There is a lovely honesty about the way Appleby goes about his business. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he's progressed from racing groom to top trainer at Godolphin's state of the art Moulton Paddocks. Either way, he just seems to feel the emotions more than others, his heart on his sleeve for the world to see.
