Charlie Appleby was inches away from adding a Newmarket Classic to his CV when Master Of the Seas and William Buick were just denied by Poetic Flare in the drive to the line.

The son of Dubawi was bidding to become the first Craven Stakes winner to follow up in the 2,000 Guineas for 17 years and was only a short-head behind the winner after looking likely to collect in the Dip.

Just 12 months after the previously unbeaten Pinatubo had finished third at 4-5 on the Rowley Mile when failing to get home, Appleby, who was also responsible for the fourth-placed Naval Crown, was knocking on the door again.
