Anthony Oppenheimer: Megallan is a pretty good horse and he'll be better on turf

Qipco 2,000 Guineas and Dante entry Megallan got his three-year-old season off to a winning start when justifying 4-6 favouritism in the Listed Burradon Stakes under Robert Havlin.

The son of Kingman was cut to 20-1 for the opening Classic after adding another success for the training partnership of John and Thady Gosden, battling hard to defeat the Roger Varian-trained Legion Of Honour, who also holds a Guineas entry, by half a length.

His breeding suggests he can improve again as he is related to his owner Anthony Oppenheimer's Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn.

Oppenheimer was unable to make it to the track but is looking forward to getting back to the racecourse, and said: "It was a very nice win. I think the horse that came second to us is very smart – they were not expecting to be beaten.

"This colt could stay a mile and a quarter because he's out of a staying mare. He'll be better on grass, but he certainly doesn't like heavy ground.

"He ran into trouble a couple of times last year and was cantering at the back of the field on heavy last time. He was unlucky in a Group race before that. I think he’s pretty good."

Double for Ryan

Kevin Ryan, who has stable stars Brando and Glass Slippers to look forward to this season, recorded two winners from two runners.

Anadora, a daughter of Havana Gold, may not be up to their level yet but showed promise on her debut to win the 5f novice contest. The trainer also struck with Treble Treble in the 6f handicap.

Slowly away under Kevin Stott, Anadora was pushed along early on but warmed to the task and beat Alaskan Jewel by a head.
