Another winner for Ardad as Tim Fitzgerald debutante Sandbeck springs 18-1 shock
The stock of emerging sire Ardad had another boost as bargain buy Sandbeck caused a shock in the 6f fillies’ novice to give trainer Tim Fitzgerald his first two-year-old winner on turf.
Ridden by Oisin McSweeney, the debutante stayed on strongly to pip longtime leader Whiteandblue by a neck at 18-1. Sandbeck joined Ardad’s list of recent winners including Group 1 Prix Morny winner Perfect Power and Eve Lodge, who provided Charlie Fellowes with his first domestic Group win in the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton on Saturday.
Fitzgerald was delighted with Sandbeck, who was purchased for just 1,500gns, saying: "We all thought she was a nice filly and we didn’t pay a great deal for her. We were always quite hopeful but you never know first time out. She seemed to behave herself nicely and did everything right.”
The North Yorkshire trainer indicated his impressive winner could be on the move if the price is right.
He added: "I'll discuss with the Newgen Racing Group. If a decent offer comes in, then certainly. They’ve had three winners in the last six weeks, so it’s good for them as well."
Endeavour excels
The William Muir and Chris Grassick-trained Epic Endeavour demonstrated his class to win for the first time as a four-year-old.
Having contested warmer races such as the Golden Mile at Goodwood, the 13-8 shot benefited from calmer waters in the feature mile handicap and won by a length and a half in the hands of PJ McDonald.
