This is a Saturday that reassuringly tends to come around every year. On this occasion it felt rather different.

What used to be Hennessy day, and 12 months ago became Ladbrokes Trophy day, has always revolved around the Hennessy or Ladbrokes Trophy.

Not so this time. Neither before the race and certainly not after it. Perhaps for the first time since the two marvellous contests collided, this was a day when the Fighting Fifth was the headline attraction.
